Exercise - Your Own Work

This exercise involved reviewing all my work in my sketchbooks, notebooks and working drawings and choosing images that I enjoy.

I scanned several of these images, putting them into areas of authorial practice, discovering once this had been done, that they mostly slotted into three catergories : - Fashion and Accessories, Children’s Publishing and Decorative Illustration.

Examples of Decorative Illustration Images.

The main image I chose was one I had designed for a greetings card to introduce myself to my tutor in assignment one.

I thought this would be good as an image on a t-shirt, particularly for adults who have an interest in signs of the zodiac, and personalized presents for loved ones, so I had one printed through Vistaprint, an online company that specializes in promotional printing, such as business cards, pens, t-shirts etc.
Vistaprint was the cheapest one I found online, and they did single garment printing, which was ideal as I only wanted one.

The image printed on the t-shirt front, and words printed on the rear.

The image would be good on several different background colours, and tried out different ones before I ordered the white background.

The colours reproduced well, but I did feel that once it was done it could have been cropped a little bit tighter so that only the central image of the crab and blue background were used, to give it a wider use, possibly on promotional material for a business i.e. a seafood restaurant on menus, aprons, logos etc.

As well as the image produced on the t-shirt I gathered some of the other images together in the Children’s publishing catergory, and put them into a booklet to be used as a portfolio of my children’s book illustrations.

This could be added to at a later date, professionally printed and finally sent to illustration agencies for some freelance work, a good way to showcase what I can do in this area.

In conclusion I am happy with the t-shirt I had printed with my logo, it was good to see how my image could be used, and how it could be improved.
